In most cases, installing a GelRest couldn't be easier -- peel off the liner and stick it to your chinrest. Occasionally though, we do get installation queries from customers and this page will attempt to deal with those issues, in case others have a similar situation.

One query we hear hear fairly often is "What if I need to move my GelRest? Can I peel it off and stick it back down?" Often a customer asks this shortly after receiving their GelRest and they're not sure where, exactly, on their chinrest to attach it i.e. what if they want to move it over to the left a little bit. Here's a good way to do a "trial placement" of your GelRest so you can test it .

First, peel back a little bit of the liner at the tip of the GelRest and fold it under as shown.

Place the Gelrest on your chinrest where you think you want it and press lightly to engage the adhesive.

Now play your instrument to see how it feels. If necesasary, you can easily peel the GelRest off and re-stick it to a new location.

When you are satisfied with your placement, reach under the GelRest, grab the remaining liner and remove it completely, exposing the rest of the adhesive.

Lay the GelRest in place and press down to fully engage the adhesive.

Your GelRest is installed!

Removal is always possible after this, but all adhesives stick best the first time you use them and lose their sticking power if you peel and re-stick. So, try not to remove your GelRest after you've finished your installation.

Another query we often hear is "What if I want to install the GelRest on a 1/4 size violin? Can I trim the gel?" The answer is Yes. The gel we use is a solid material and has no liquid inside so you can cut it quite easily with ordinary scissors. See below...
Here is a 1/8 size violin. We're going to install a 4/4 size GelRest and trim with the scissors shown.
First, remove the chinrest from the violin. It's much easier and safer to cut the GelRest with the chinrest removed. Note - the threads on the clamp are reverse threads. To loosen them turn clockwise.
With the chinrest removed, install the GelRest firmly on the chinrest. On a small chinrest, I like to install the GelRest backwards - with the front tip towards the heel (clamp). Normally, the front tip of the GelRest is aligned with the front tip of the chinrest.
Now take your scissors and cut, following the edge of the chinrest. Try to make one long smooth cut.. It will take about 3 cuts to make a complete cycle around the entire curved chinrest.
Now, just re-install the chinrest and Voila! You're all finished.
